1929 Singer Junior Tourer

Few owners, the current for 15 years; in regular use until recently; affectionately known as Dilly; has spent her whole life in the local area; transferable number plate

A rival to the Austin 7 and the Morris 8, the Singer Junior was launched in 1926 and was initially only available as a four-seater, three-door tourer in blue with black wings. Costing £148.10s, it was powered by an 847cc four-cylinder ohv engine rated at 7.78hp with a three-speed gearbox and a top speed of 48mph.
In 1928 it was significantly improved with brakes to all four wheels, new axle and suspension design, new single plate clutch, aluminium rather than iron pistons and a wider range of body styles. Well-received by press and public alike, it remained in production until 1932, sales never dropping below 6,000 cars a year and helping Singer to become the third biggest car maker in England.
This Singer Junior four-door Tourer was built at the Coventry works in December 1928 and was bought new by Mr Alan Morris of Pondside, Eyton, Leominster in April 1929. He kept it until his death in 1969 when it was passed to Mr Gerald Perkins of Hereford, who in turn sold it to a Mr Kirby who kept it on display at his private museum in Symonds Yat.
In 2003 it was bought by Mr Percy Hall of Pembridge who kept it until his death in 2006 when our vendor acquired it. Affectionately known as ‘Dilly’, the Singer was in regular use during our vendor’s ownership, taking friends and family on many days out and attending local shows. In 2018 it was put into storage due to the declining health of the vendor (who prided himself on being as old as the car), with the battery removed and the radiator drained.
Dilly remains in charming condition throughout and now needs a caring sixth owner who can get her recommissioned and back on the lanes where she belongs. She has never strayed far from the local area and retains her original (transferable) Herefordshire number plate, VJ 1694.
Documentation includes a V5C, three old MOTs from 2006 – 2010, Singer Club and VSCC literature, show cards and rosette, copies of period road tests, an original owner’s handbook and an original guide to the Rotax electric lighting, starting and ignition system.
