This now rare and early MkI Transit has led a very easy
life and has had just two owners from new - both near neighbours.
First
registered as a Motor Caravan in April 1967, its first owner kept it until 1994,
at which time it moved a few hundred yards up the road.
A professional
conversion by Coachwork Conversions Ltd, their Freedom specification
offered 'a new concept in Motor Caravanning' according to the accompanying
brochure.
It has four berths and comes with a cooker, cool box and wash
basin and is the most original camper we have seen for some time.
A
booklet on file details a trip in May 1968 to Greece, through Belgium,
Germany, Austria, Italy, Serbia and Yugoslavia, covering nearly 2,000 miles
before they got to Athens - an epic journey over just one month. By the
time the White Cliffs hove into sight, over 5,000 miles had been
covered!
By 1999, the mileage was still only 50,682 rising to just 54,032
by 2005. The odometer shows just 54,173 miles today so it has been resting for
some time.
The current owner has commissioned a professional respray in
Ford Diamond White, fitted a new fuel pump and generally recommissioned the
vehicle which has been running nicely while onsite.
Early Transits are
highly collectable these days, with few survivors lasting the rigours of a
commercial working life. This exceptional example offers the comforts of a VW,
with more space and individuality and looks exceptional value at the suggested
guide price.
