Ground-up restored on a galvanised chassis; well equipped; recent new
cutch; practical, fun and something a little bit different
This
splendid Carawagon started life as a Bronze Green Home Market basic Land Rover
diesel (now petrol) which was completed in September 1961 and despatched in
early October to Elliot and Sons in Bideford according to the Heritage
Certificate on file.
It comes with a full ownership print-out from the
DVLA when you could get such things and a full file of information and
bills.
There were two factory-approved converters for Land Rovers -
Searle with their Carawagon and Dormobile.
It was acquired as a bit of a
project in around 2011 and at that time, carried the Safari badges on the front
wings and a correct rear door, but sadly the interior had gone and there was
much to do.
Its owner/restorer undertook a mammoth rebuild to full Mk
Safari spec, work which included a total strip, replacement galvanised chassis
and a rebuild of just about everything else. Bills on file attest to the depth
and breadth of the work done.
We don't know when, but it has been
converted to a petrol engine - a good idea as they are much sweeter, faster and
nicer to drive, if a little less economical.
The completed car was then
shown and enjoyed, the current owner acquiring it via Brightwells in
2019. He has used it sparingly, taking it to Alltrack 4x4 for a new clutch and
both master and slave cylinders in August of this year. That is the only
replacement it has needed apart from routine maintenance since
purchase.
Presenting beautifully as you can see, it comes with lots of
interesting Searle Carawagon features and is ready for work and
play.
