Affectionately known as Kev, this
lovely TR4 comes with a vast history file extending back to the mid-1970s which
will take the new owner many happy hours to digest.
The Heritage Certificate shows
that Kev left the factory in January 1963 finished in Signal Red with a
black Vynide interior, extras including a Surrey Top, overdrive, disc wheels and
a heater. The destination dealer was CA Britten & Co of Liverpool
and Kev was first registered in March 1963, the file containing details of
all eight owners from 1974 to the present day.
From 1987 to 1994 Kev was owned by a Mr
Dearing of Rotheram who treated him to a total body-off rebuild which took
five years to complete. In the early ‘90s Kev was raced at Cadwell Park in
a Morgan Club event, a letter on file recounting how the owner was “cautioned by
the marshals for my driving style (100mph sideways) which ruined a new set of
Michelin XZX tyres in a single day!”. Rated by the owner as “one of the best TRs
in the country”, Kev also completed a 4,000-mile tour of Spain.
From 1999 –
2003 Kev was owned by a Mrs Setchell of Leamington Spa who won at least
half-a-dozen awards at TR Register concours events, including Best TR4/4A/5 in
2000 and again in 2002. The next owner, Mr Hogg of Crediton, kept Kev until
2012 and also won the same award in 2007.
The current owner acquired Kev in April
2012 when he was showing around 12,000 miles on the clock and he has
covered around 30,000 miles in him since. He has maintained Kev
religiously, a quick tot up of the bills showing that he has spent well over
£25,000 on the car during his 13-year ownership.
In 2018/19 Kev was sent to Classic Cars Cardiff
for a full mechanical refresh which cost around £8,000 and included: full engine
rebuild with new pistons, liners, bearings, reground crank etc; cylinder head
rebuilt and converted for unleaded fuel; gearbox and overdrive overhauled;
diff/axle rebuilt with modern rubber lip seals; Pertronix ignition; Revotec
cooling fan; new clutch; new wiring; new radiator; new oil cooler; brake system
overhaul; new stainless steel exhaust system; engine bay stripped to bare metal
and repainted plus much else besides.
In March 2022 Kev was sent to Stepside
Coachworks of Narberth for a respray and new front brake calipers which cost
£4,000.
Since
the engine rebuild, Kev has only covered some 10,600 miles and has been
regularly maintained by GF Beck of Pembroke Dock.
Retaining his original (transferable)
Coventry-issue number plate, 9567 KV, Kev comes with a vast history file
including invoices; correspondence from previous owners; original factory
workshop manuals; handbook; various books on the TR range; Heritage Certificate
plus no fewer than 29 old MOTs.
As you can see in the photos, this pampered and
well-historied TR4 looks very smart indeed and has been starting promptly and
running beautifully as we have moved it around on site, with healthy 70psi oil
pressure.
On offer here from a deceased estate, all Kev
needs now is an enthusiastic new owner who can reap the benefits of the vast
amounts of love and attention he has received in his 62 years to date.
