Description

Original RHD; one of only 20–50 road-registered Appias in the UK; late Series III model; current owner 5 years; running and driving on site

The Lancia Appia was launched in 1953 as a replacement for the ageing pre-war Ardea. It introduced a larger 1,090cc version of Lancia’s signature V4 engine, redesigned from scratch by Vittorio Jano and borrowing inspiration from the acclaimed Aurelia. Power was sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed gearbox, and the car retained Lancia traditions such as sliding-pillar independent front suspension and pillarless doors.

As with all Lancia’s of the period – often referred to as “the thinking man’s Alfa Romeo” – build quality was exceptional. However, quality came at a cost, and early sales were slow compared to cheaper rivals like Fiat and Alfa Romeo’s new Giulietta. Positive reviews and steady improvements soon boosted demand though, and by the time the third series was produced (1959–63), over 55,000 examples were sold, from a total run of around 98,000.

Performance was impressive for its time: the 40bhp engine pushed the Appia to nearly 80mph while still returning around 30mpg, at a time when an equivalent Ford struggled to reach 60mph. Despite not being officially imported into Britain, its price would have equated to £780 – almost double the cost of a Ford.

This particular example is a late Series III model from 1961, featuring the wider horizontal grille inspired by the flagship Flaminia. Power was increased to 48bhp and safety improved with a dual-circuit hydraulic braking system. Finished in an elegant period shade of pale green with a matching green and cream interior, it remains a stylish and understated car. The pillarless construction offers exceptional access to the cabin – opening both front and rear doors at once never fails to impress. It is also right-hand drive, a factory option even in Italy at the time.

This well-preserved Appia returns to us for sale after more than five years with its current owner, who carried out substantial work to ensure it was kept road worthy over the years. It has started, driven and stopped during the time it has been with us for photographs and video.

With an estimated only 20–50 road-registered Appias currently in the UK – out of approximately 13,500 RHD examples built – this is one of the rarer classics on British roads today. The car remains in honest, original condition and can be enjoyed immediately, or lightly restored while being driven.
